Sugo Pizza is a sleek unassuming pizza al taglio shop in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighborhood. In case you’re unfamiliar with “al taglio”, it means by the slice. Romans eat pizza like this morning, noon and night and I have to admit, it’s one of my favorite things about the city! This is the one and only Roman style pizza shop I’ve found in Amsterdam and let’s just say I’m super excited! I ate my first slice just 20 minutes ago and fell so in love that I had to write about it right away.

Sugo Pizza reminded me of Friday nights at home with mom and dad more than anything else in Amsterdam. Unlike the typical thin crust pizza you find in Amsterdam, Sugo pizza is made with a thick crust in rectangular pans. 

The dough is prepared according to al taglio tradition with an organic, protein-rich, wheat, spelt, sourdough and soya flour. It is naturally leavened for 72 hours resulting in a light and airy crust that is soft and chewy on the inside but crisp on the outside – no soggy middle pieces here!

They have traditional toppings like tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil in addition to more exotic combinations like pumpkin, Taleggio cheese and walnuts or smoked salmon, mascarpone and fresh dill.

My favorite slice is with caramelized onion, pine nuts, spinach and ricotta. Fold your slice in half like a Roman, leave the fold out like an American or dig in with a fork and knife like a Dutch. No matter which slice you choose, the ingredients are always fresh and many options are vegetarian or vegan. But hopefully you aren’t vegan, that way you can enjoy all the delicious imported Italian meats and cheeses. 

Sugo Pizza may taste like Rome, but instead of buying by the kilo, you buy by the slice. Prices range from €2.80 to  €4.20 per slice depending on your toppings. I do find it to be a bit pricy, but the 100% natural ingredients make up for it. Plus, they have rewards cards – for every €5 you spend you get a stamp, once you receive eight, get a free slice! 

In addition to the pizza, they have a small selection of side salads, imported Italian sodas, coffee, tea, beer and wine. If you’re really looking to try something outrageous, go for the Nutella Pizza with powdered sugar. It is served warm and the melty Nutella oozes out of the crispy sugared crust like a fantasy, plus it’s only €2! Worth the splurge and the calories.
